Mater Misericordiae Hospital Afikpo is a voluntary Agency Hospital built and opened by the Catholic Bishop of Abakaliki Diocese, Late Bishop Thomas McGettrick in 1946 with 24 Beds which has evolved over the years to 225 - 300 Beds hospital. It is now managed by the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki under the Proprietor, His Lordship Most Rev. Dr. Peter Nworie Chukwu, having the hospital Board which supervises and coordinates the activities of the hospital. The hospital operates tripartite Administration, the Hospital Administrator, the medical Superintendent and the Deputy Director of Nursing Services form the Executive Management of the Hospital. The hospital has grown both in size and structure from 1946 till date having numerous recognitions in the training of Medical, Nursing Laboratory and Paramedical Staff.

- We believe in complete service and dedication to the sick, the elderly and to contribute to the welfare of the society by training and developing appropriate health personnel to meet the needs of the hospital and the country in general.
- We endeavour to inculcate into the Staff selfless service to humanity having great respect for life in our approach to the care of the unborn child and less privileged regardless of colour, creed, race, social or economic status.
- Awareness of the spiritual needs of the patient, resources are provided within the hospital for a peaceful death when every effort to save life is lost.
- The management stays flexible enough to meet and adopt to the changing needs of the hospital, the staff, community and society in general.
THE HOSPITAL OBJECTIVES INCLUDE
- To provide quality patient care service to the community and environs within the available resources.
- To promote and develop in conjunction with other health sectors of the government environmental health policies and programme.
- To train and develop appropriate Nursing Personnel to meet the needs of the hospital and the entire Society of Nigeria.
- To ensure uniformity to agreed standards of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria in the training and delivery of health care services.
- To contribute to the social, educational and physical needs of the community in form of provision of better health care facilitates and employment opportunity.
- Periodically evaluate the adequacy of facilities to meet patients and personnel needs and for higher educational programme.
